I write this blog. It does not represent anyone else's opinions or perspectives. Regardless of employers or clients or any other associations, this is my blog and it does not speak for anyone else. I have learned that perception is more powerful than reality. So, we get to experience the joys of claiming and disclaiming. Isn't that super!

Why is word of mouth so important?

I don’t bet.  If I did, these would be some of the bets I might make.

  • What books have you read lately, and how do you hear about them? I bet someone you know recommended the book or the author.
  • What movies have you watched recently? I bet you may have decided not to watch one or more movies recently, because someone you know did not like it.
  • What mobile phone do you use? I bet you saw someone you know with that phone and then you wanted it.  Or, I bet someone you know hated a phone and you didn’t get it.
  • What local contractor did you use for work on your house? I bet someone else in your neighborhood could make a recommendation that you’d trust.
  • What church do you attend or visit? I bet you visit a church much faster when you know it’s recommended by someone you trust.
  • What school do you want your kids to attend? I bet you know some other parents with kids that go to that school.

Word of mouth is important because we care about the input into our lives.  We want value.  We want to leverage the deals we can get when someone may have an in or may be able to help us get a deal.  We not only want quality, we also want value.  I think that our satisfaction, as it relates to quality and value, is higher when there is a positive, word of mouth recommendation.
