Today is the end of my 3rd week at my new job. Here are some simple things I’ve observed and some simple plans going forward.
- I have a basic understanding of the lay of the land. It was told to me, shown to me, and now that I’ve been involved for a little while and I understand better.
- There are multiple objectives and multiple strategies to get those done. Organization is important and for the most part is very well in place. For that I am extremely grateful and having that is comforting.
- My new coworkers are smart and very capable. I’m excited to learn more from many other talented people.
- My skills and experience fit in well, and are very needed here. That should not be a surprise to anyone. That’s why I took the job and that’s why they offered it.
So, how does this affect plans going forward?
- I need to bring some structure and some definitions in a few areas. Having a Knowledge Management bucket is good. Using that bucket in a simple and efficient way is powerful. Some things are well defined. Others will need me to do that defining.
- I’m energized about learning more ways that people communicate and helping them get the resources they need to do their jobs. I went to school for communications, and many parts of that play very large in my daily activities. I see that as fortunate for me, and clearly how I communicate will have a large impact on results.
- There is plenty of work to be done. I need to stay fresh and focused. That has already entailed saying no to many other personal things, and other professional things, so that I can properly focus on work. That will need to continue, and both I and my new job will benefit by my personal abilities to drive forward on objectives and focus on the important.
That’s the crux of my first 3 weeks. I have a lot of notes and have had a bunch of meetings and met many new associates. I’m ready to hammer out some projects and get busy productive.
I’m also very glad it’s Friday! Even though I can’t win the office brackets, watching the Final Four this weekend will be awesome.
