I’ve heard these words a lot lately. In the recent email from Steve Balmer, those words are firmly embraced. The email also boldly talks about change, and risk.
The changes are dramatic. And with significant change comes more than a little risk. After all, these are some of the best-known and most-used products on the planet. Windows powers 845 million computers. Office is used by more than 450 million people. Any thoughtful businessperson would think twice before tinkering with the products that people use every day to manage their work and run their businesses.
I’m trying to position myself to be in a good situation for dealing with companies and people and organizations as they all go through a next wave of change.
Opportunity favors the prepared. I’m trying to prepare.
Further, IT is not an expense. It is an asset. If you don’t think that way, you will deal with all the consequences of your thinking. Is that the way you want to be agile and grow and learn and adapt?
“…we want to continue to advance the revolution in workplace productivity and efficiency that we started 11 years ago by delivering tools and capabilities that complete the transformation of IT from an expense into a strategic asset.”
Part of me says, “Duh!” And, part of me says, “Thank you!” For obvious reasons, in most situations, saying Duh! is not an affective tool for consulting or helping others embrace change and risk. It is nice to hear others say this stuff in a way that is so concise and factual and bold. Hearing that helps me to not feel so isolated in my own efforts to leverage technology and facilitate business growth.
Change takes time and risk affects different people in different ways. I think there are ways to deal with this – strategically.
