I am prospecting companies for new employment. I’m reading and learning and listening and absorbing a decent amount of new information. I’m also following a number of political issues and watching how my friends and associates and the general public respond to various events that happen in our world (both locally, and also with a global prospective). I’m noticing a trend.
We need Strategic Communications Consultants.
Why? We need communication help. There are a lot of really good ideas. There are a lot of good leaders. There is a lot of passion and enthusiasm. However, if the message is not communicated well, there is a giant struggle for good ideas to get traction.
In a comment to a post by Jonathan Schwartz (CEO of Sun Microsystems), I said,
I think it’s hard for most people to comprehend how much infrastructure is needed, how much it costs, and why it is needed. Further, I think it’s hard for most people to comprehend a quarter of a billion dollars. To that end, this still sounds like a bunch of obscure references.
When more leaders of organizations (very small, up to very large) understand this, then the people pushing the ideas will get more traction and will in turn get more results. As has often been the case with “modernization” and “growth” – there is a lot of push back from those who don’t understand. I don’t think that technology is the biggest hurdle – it’s all the communication around it, and all the education that’s needed to breed more acceptance and encouragement of R&D and other tech [r]evolutions.
For me, this means that part of my search is looking at doing more consulting, in a little bit of a different arena than I’ve done in the past. This arena revolves around communications. My biggest struggles when doing IT consulting in the past has not been the technology. It has not been the logistics. It has not been the infrastructure. The biggest struggle has been dealing with change resistance and has been the need to communicate effectively and to listen. Getting buy-in is very significant.
IDEA + GREAT COMMUNICATION ABOUT IDEA = NEED
IDEA + BAD COMMUNICATION ABOUT IDEA = FRUSTRATION
There is plenty of work to do in this area. There is plenty of work for people who understand technology and who believe in leveraging the power of ideas and leveraging the power of technology. Organizations need help here.
I am listening.

Well said, Toby! The latest blog design looks great.
Some people say PR is dead. Personally, I think it’s just reincarnated into a new set of tools (including blogs), outside of the hierarchy it used to have.
[...] This brings me to strategic communications. Hmmm… I’ve felt this need before. I think many organizations struggle here. I need to keep learning why and I need to keep gaining experience that will help me to help them. I need to deal with my own sadness or anger or whatever other emotion LeadershipVoid and find the underlying things that need to be dealt with. Organizations need that help. I want to help them. [...]
