Delta is the symbol for change in science: chemistry/math/physics. OK, that’s a terrible definition. But, it gets to how I’m referring to it in the subject of this post as An Anti-Delta Force. (For more info see delta from dictionary.com.)
I just came across good info about overcoming resistance to change. (Resistance to Change by A. J. Schuler, Psy. D.) Here is a quick bullet of the Top Ten Reasons People Resist Change:
- The risk of change is seen as greater than the risk of standing still.
- People feel connected to other people who are identified with the old way.
- People have no role models for the new activity.
- People fear they lack the competence to change.
- People feel overloaded and overwhelmed.
- People have a healthy skepticism and want to be sure new ideas are sound.
- People fear hidden agendas among would-be reformers.
- People feel the proposed change threatens their notions of themselves.
- People anticipate a loss of status or quality of life.
- People genuinely believe that the proposed change is a bad idea.
Does anyone know anyone who has not had to deal with change? It is such a part of everyday living. For a logical thinker, this helps me understand a little bit more about other people and helps me to be a little more empathetic. It helps me understand more about myself.
Different people enjoy different things, and adapt and adopt change in different ways. (Side note: Speaking of change, I went to see Pocket Change (http://www.pchangemusic.com) last night. They are good, and the music was fun!) I have been known to be an early adopter. Yet those around me that I would argue are the most resistant to change, have argued that I don’t like change. Huh? Well, that’s because different perspectives yield different views and different realities. I can’t argue with someone else’s feelings. But, I can empathize, and I can listen, and I can participate in conversation and I can enjoy the spice of life that different viewpoints bring.
How do you let change affect you?

Aye, the Pocket Change was a delightful treat.
I attempt to never let change get to me, unfortunately. Perhaps it’s the OCD-ness in me that doesn’t like being pushed out of my ‘comfort zone’. However, once out and having figured out what’s going on, I acclimate very quickly.
More tolerance of change is something I need to work on.
Cheers Toby.
